When the Silence Breaks was everything I love about romantic suspense done right. From the beginning, Elizabeth Goddard had me invested (which is no surprise, given how much I adore her books).
I enjoyed FMC, Sarah Ellison, an intelligence analyst with a secretive mission, daring spirit, and determination to uncover the truth and protect those she loves. And Ryder Goodwin? A former Navy SEAL turned wilderness guide with a protective side and plenty of guarded edges—um, yes, please. 😂
The setting was also a highlight for me, something Goddard does well in her stories. The wilderness becomes a character of its own—dark, formidable and full of danger lurking around every corner. Add in a mysterious WWII-era cargo plane and secrets surrounding its cargo, and I was hooked. I thought the way Goddard connected a historical mystery to present-day danger was not only intriguing, but creative.
There were twists and turns I didn’t see coming, including a final reveal that surprised me. The pacing had a movie-like quality that kept me turning pages far later into the night than I intended. I also appreciated that the romance never felt forced—it unfolded naturally alongside the suspense and gave me the kind of tension and chemistry I like.
If you love adventure, mystery, danger, intrigue, unexpected twists, turns, and romance all woven into one, When the Silence Breaks is definitely one to read. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it to my fellow romantic suspense readers as a solid five star they’re sure to love as well.
