ROMANTIC SUSPENSE
Gritty and inspiring… A powerful, deeply-emotional story that completely captivated me. Stone is simply fantastic!
Dealing with the depths and heavy despair of human trafficking, the words of this novel walked right off the page and into my heart. Ronie Kendig delivers perfectly-flawed characters who face fear, grief and pain head on, while battling through their emotions in a very real and raw way. Kendig offers it all with this first book in her new Metcalfe’s series: intense emotions, sizzling romance, suspense, faith, and family, plus the healing that comes after walking through years of brokenness.
A must read!

She cost him everything. Now, he’s forced to protect her.
Stone Metcalfe embodies the Metcalfe legacy—blue eyes, an unfair amount of good looks, and hardcore patriot-laced character. But a foolish lapse in judgment dismantles his name and career. Humiliated and furious, he retreats to his mountain lodge to hide from media hounds and eke out a new life. However, one phone call from an old Army buddy upends Stone’s best-laid plans.
Supermodel Brighton Buchanan had designers and men eating out of her hand until a terrible mistake trapped her in the soul-eating world of human trafficking. Years later, she is used by her captors to take down the best man she’s ever known. The man she loves. Hope lost, she’s unexpectedly freed—and thrown back into Stone’s life. Being forgiven is out of the question considering how much he hates her.
Believing danger and her trafficker are one wrong move away, Brighton will do anything to keep him from being ruined again—even if it means going back to that life. As everything is falling apart and threats mount against Brighton, Stone realizes forgiveness is the easy part. Protecting her—and his heart—is another story.
★★★★★ | A gripping new series from one of my favorite authors of all time! Stone is simply fantastic!
Dealing with the depths and heavy despair of human trafficking, the words of this story walked right off the page, into my heart. Kendig delivered perfectly-flawed characters who face fear, grief and pain head on, battling through their emotions in a very real and raw way. This novel had it all: romance, suspense, faith, and family as well as the revival of love and healing that comes after walking through years of brokenness.
A powerful, deeply emotional story that completely captivated me!
I absolutely loved the characters in this story... Having been introduced to a few of them in Kendig’s previous series, I enjoyed learning more about this dynamic family. This novel sets the stage for the Metcalfes' series; a strong family who has heart, faith and perseverance. Hiding away in the mountains of Virginia after his political career derailed over a bad choice, readers meet Stone, who suddenly finds himself facing his deepest angst and uncovering a broken heart. When Brighton walks back into his life needing refuge, the tension ramps up and the romance soon sizzles. Stone proves to be the fierce, heroic force Brighton needs in her corner and Brighton finds rest, acceptance and safety when she needs it most.
I found this story to be well-written, edgy and exciting. Kendig kept me turning the pages as quickly as possible, which is a trademark I’ve come to know and love about her stories. She unfolds the details of her characters’ past, revealing a little at a time, keeping the intensity high and me, fully engrossed!
Stone focuses on how choices made can impact our lives, the forgiveness that is found when we surrender hurt and anger to a God who loves us, and does all this while delicately handling the horrors of a life that’s been trafficked. While the reality of being preyed upon and the exploitation of trafficking is evident, Kendig delivers this novel with evident research, knowledge and great care. She demonstrates grace and the need for redemption which ultimately leads to healing making this novel both gritty and inspiring.
I was impressed with the heart behind this novel and simply can’t say enough about it! A must read, for sure!
Also, if you haven’t read any of Ronie Kendig’s other series such as the Tox Files, Discarded Heroes or Quiet Professionals, I highly recommend those as well.
My Reviews on the Book of wars series By Ronie Kendig
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Ronie Kendig is an Army brat who grew up in the classic military family, with her father often TDY and her mother holding down the proverbial fort. Their family moved often, which left Ronie attending six schools by the time she’d entered fourth grade. Her only respite and “friends” during this time were the characters she created.
It was no surprise when she married a military veteran—her real-life hero—in June 1990. Married more than twenty-five years, Ronie and her husband have homeschooled for the last eighteen years. Despite the craziness of life, Ronie finds balance and peace with her faith, family, and retired military working dog in Northern Virginia.
Ronie has a deep love and passion for people, especially hurting people, which is why she pursued and obtained a B.S. in Psychology from Liberty University. Ronie speaks and teaches across the country and mentors other writers.
