About This Book:
If walls could talk, what nightmare might they expose?
1879
When Eloise James's sister, Evania, goes missing after being admitted to an asylum, Eloise is determined to find her sibling but instead discovers evidence of dying patients and missing remains. Wannabe journalist Silas Dobbs has his own suspicions that something more nefarious is at work, and that black market sales may originate at the asylum. Together, they are intent on learning whether Evania is alive, or if her body has also been stolen. But unraveling a web of underground resurrectionists proves daunting, and the dead cannot share their secrets.
Present Day
Tilly Thompson is horrified to find historical human remains entombed in a wall of the Gothic mansion her grandfather just purchased, launching her into an investigation of the original owners' questionable past. The James family legacy harbors a darkness tightly woven through decades of secrets, but the past refuses to remain ensnared by silence. Will revealing the truth resurrect dangers best kept buried forever?
Jaime Jo Wright masterfully weaves a dual-timeline gothic suspense novel that brings together a haunting historical tale and a shadowy modern-day mystery. For fans of atmospheric thrillers, spooky reads, the Victorian era, creepy mansions, and dark family secrets.
MY REVIEW: ★★★★★ 5/5
The Resurrection of Evania James by Jaime Jo Wright was SO good! Atmospheric, mysterious, and thoroughly entertaining, this is exactly the kind of book I love picking up from Wright (and why she is an autobuy author for me). As with her other novels, I found myself wholly immersed in the haunting, dual-timeline tale she wove surrounding a generations-old family mansion hiding secrets, tragedy and decades of brokenness and pain.
Both storylines drew me in, and I really enjoyed the main characters. Eloise's determination to find and protect her sister paralleled Tilly's love and loyalty to her grandfather in the aftermath of his alzheimer's diagnosis. I also loved that each timeline had its own thread of romance. One was playful and flirty with just the right touch of humor, while the other was more serious and compelling. Both were so well done!
Of course, this wouldn't be a JJW novel without its fair share of unsettling secrets, eerie moments and delicious little frights. I love how she creates an atmosphere that is both haunting and impossible to tear myself away from. Her stories may venture into darker depths of horror and mystery, but she handles those elements with care, ultimately revealing the purpose behind them. What I appreciate most is that there's always something deeper beneath the mystery. As the layers unfold, Wright explores the brokenness and sinful nature of humanity while pointing readers toward truth, reconciliation and the hope of redemption.
If you enjoy atmospheric, historical mysteries, dual timelines and riveting stories, I cannot recommend this one enough, especially for the fall season!
