You can't override the heart

It may seem odd to seek peace by moving to a war-torn African country, but for medical missionary Dr. Cynthia Myers, it provided a way to escape a shallow life of unearned wealth, a philandering fiancé, and a father now square in the public eye as vice president of the United States. At least here she knows her work and life have meaning. But all that is thrown into chaos when she fails to save the life of a local warlord's mortally wounded son.

As part of the Army Special Forces A-Team on a mission to capture and subdue the warlord, Captain Rick Norton is compelled to use deadly force to save Cynthia's life. Enraged at the violence she witnessed and riddled with guilt that men died because of her, Cynthia doesn't want to like anything about Rick and his team--but an unexpected attraction is taking hold.

With two members of his team badly injured and rebels in hot pursuit, Rick will have to draw upon all his strength and cunning to get her out alive . . . because he's beginning to think that, despite their differences, they just may be able to make a life together.

MY REVIEW: ★★★★/5

Hallee Bridgeman kicks off a brand new series, Love and Honor, an authentic collection of military suspense, grounded in faith with strong characters and exciting action!

HIGHLIGHTS:

African Jungle Setting · Escape for Life · Enemies to Lovers Trope · A Silent, Broody Hero · A Strong Female Doctor Heroine · Military Brotherhood · Faith-Based Fiction

WHAT I LIKED:

I really enjoyed the tension at the beginning of this story between Dr. Myers and Captain Norton. Her stance on violence trends toward a more passive, optimistic personality until Captain Norton shows up, wreaking havoc around her small clinic, bulldozing her heart!

The first half of this novel was very exciting and kept me wrapped up in the suspense and drama. I loved how Dr. Myers became a part of Rick’s mission and both of their dedication to the people around them. The jungle came alive through Bridgeman’s vivid descriptions and she had me on the edge of my seat a handful of times.

The novel was well-written and used language that made it feel very authentic and believable.

I felt like both main characters were strong, grounded in their faith and honorable. I enjoyed the brotherhood among Captain Norton’s team.

ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS:

There was a lull near the end that had me a little bored, but because I was so invested in the beginning of this story, I wanted to see it through. The ending felt anti-climatic compared to the excitement the novel started out with.

SUMMARY:

A solid four stars! The faith elements were very rich and I found this to be a novel that I liked well enough based solely on the authenticity, the characters and the strong, personal faith of those characters. There are moments of suspense, humor, brotherhood and patriotism. I believe readers who enjoy inspirational, traditional Christian fiction will find this story to be clean and exciting! I’m looking forward to reading the next installment in this series.
