Educational and fun
Early readers will delight over these adorable new, “I Can Read” books featuring Fiona the Hippo and her zoo friends!
These adorable books are based on Richard Crodrey’s characterization of Fiona the Hippo, a real live hippo born at the Cincinnati Zoo. Children can follow along on an adventure to meet and learn about Fiona in the days and weeks after she was born, join her on an adventure alongside her zoo friends through a thunderstorm and to save a baby penguin as well as discover just how special Fiona really is!
My Review: I love these level 1 early readers! With short sentences, large text and simple words, children can test their reading skills while enjoying adorable stories about Fiona and her zoo friends, plus indulge themselves in a story that offers value as well.
In the first book, Meet Fiona the Hippo, readers are introduced to Fiona and learn about the team that helped her through her first days as she grew. This cute story is educational and sweet as Fiona learns to take her first steps, eat and learn how special and loved she is!
When a thunderstorm comes up at the zoo, Fiona demonstrates to her zoo friends how they can all stick together and weather the storm without being scared in Fiona and the Rainy Day.

Fantastic Fiona sets out on an adventurous stroll through the zoo to see all the special things the other animals can do. She wonders if she’s special as well and finds out along the way that she is kind, brave and not afraid to try new things, which in turn makes her pretty special too!
Then, Fiona Saves the Day as she works together with her zoo friends for form and execute a plan to save her friend Mango, the penguin, a beautiful demonstration of teamwork and determination.

I love that each of these four little stories offers something different, with everything from educational value to overcoming fears, learning to work together and discovering one’s own self worth as well as see worth in others. The illustrations in these books are simply darling, offering bright and vibrant colors and a diverse array of animals for children to learn about and point out, created by the NY Times Bestselling illustrator, Richard Cowdrey (with Donald Wu). These are the perfect addition to a new reader’s library and would be great for homeschool families.
